into the next millennium. No, she could never leave.
Why not?
Kyna's eyes popped open. ''What?"
She looked over her shoulder again and then at her watch.
"Shit fire!"
Throwing the car in gear, Kyna floored the accelerator and left a trail of rubber all the way down the street.
You fell asleep! You idiot!
But if that were true, why was she so frightened?
She worked through the gears, shot through a red light just ahead of a Cadillac's bumper and threw the car into a turn onto Ridgeway. She got caught by the traffic light at the intersection of Ridgeway and Winchester Road and sat drumming her fingers on the steering wheel and staring at a sign in the window of a gun shop across the street. Cyrus likes guns, she thought.
On a whim, she turned into the parking lot when the light turned green and went into the store.

Cyrus had to bounce up and down on the suitcase to close the zipper. He had never packed for such an extensive trip and, as a result, had packed nearly everything he owned.
The front door slammed. "Hello!"
Won't you come in, he thought. "Back here!"
Kyna waltzed into the bedroom and tossed a paper bag at him. Cyrus caught it but lost his seat on the suitcase.
"Love those catlike reflexes." She laughed.
His face flamed as he pulled a leather shoulder holster out of the bag. "What's this?"
"A present," she replied. "You don't have one, do you?"
The fact was, he did. But the gift was so unexpected, given the picture he had formed of her, that he lied. "No."
"Try it on. The guy at the gun shop said it's one of the quick-release types."
The contraption wasn't as simple as it looked. Cyrus slipped it around his shoulders, shrugged and twisted at the waist a couple of times and then took it off. After adjusting the straps
